The Pyramids Of Ancient Egypt - 1614 Words

Within the deserts of Egypt lie the ruins of a colossal ancient civilization. Of all the seven wonders of the Ancient World, these are the only ones that we have been allowed to appreciate as they are they only ones still around today. These are, of course, the great pyramids of ancient Egypt. It is obvious that these structures had a purpose for the ancient Egyptians and were not built simply to impress future generations. While they seem basic in form, as they are simply four-sided pyramids with square bases, they had a meaning for the pharaohs who had them built. Even by today’s standards, the pyramids of ancient Egypt are an impressive feat of engineering, due to their enormous size, both in building materials and finished product.†¦show more content†¦The previous style of burial of Egyptian pharaohs was the mastaba, a flat-roofed structure made of brick. However, at the beginning of the Old Kingdom, stone was introduced as a building material. Building with ston e has been attributed to Imhotep, the most ancient of all known architects. He was the designer of the first type of Egyptian pyramid, the step pyramid, which was first introduced at the burial complex of Zoser, just outside the ancient city of Memphis. It was achievements such as these that gained Imhotep great respect among later Egyptians who not only saw him as a great architect, but also â€Å"a magician, astronomer, and the father of the art of medicine† (Edwards, 35). Step pyramids are similar to the pyramids we know today, but instead of being flat on all four sides, they have setbacks as they rise, giving the appearance of giant steps. These step pyramids were not true pyramids. However, by the second dynasty of the Old Kingdom, true pyramids began to take shape. The now-ruined pyramid of Meidum is an early example of a true pyramid. While the ruined core of the superstructure is the only thing that really remains of this pyramid, archaeologists have deduced that it was originally built as a step pyramid, and then later converted to a true pyramid by building over the steps, thereby flattening the sides (Edwards, 74-77). However, the evolution of the true pyramid was not without its flaws. One good example of this

Good bye free essay sample

On June 14, 2008, my sister called me from upstairs in her usual annoyed tone. I slowly trekked up the stairs, wondering what I had done this time to annoy her (was it my pigsty of a room? or did she find out about the headphones I somehow forgot to ask if I could borrow?). None of my ponderings could prepare me for the words she would say. As I stepped into the dim lighted room she said â€Å"she’s dead†, â€Å"who†, I asked, â€Å"Ms. Chin, she died this morning.† At first I laughed â€Å"You’re joking, right† I said, seeing the stern expression on my sister’s face I knew that she was being serious. After, I had had a few minutes to grasp the reality of my first cousin’s death; it felt as though the room became dimmer and suddenly I just collapsed on the floor, bawling. How could my twenty- six year old cousin be dead? She was perfectly healthy; in fact, she spoke to my sister the night before. We will write a custom essay sample on Good bye or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page All that raced through my mind was my cousin, Suzanne, I could only imagine how she must feel, her older sister was the only immediate family that lived in Jamaica, and now she was dead. During, the next few days my house was silent, the only time we spoke was when going over flight arrangements. We were all dealing with our grief in different ways, my sisters with their planning, and me with my solitude. Soon, we were off to Jamaica â€Å"the vacation destination†, but this trip would be anything but a vacation. As soon as we arrived on Jamaican soil, we visited our aunt to give her our condolences, but I, on the other hand wanted to be with my Susan to comfort her. We stayed with my aunt and cousin for a few hours until our jet lag kicked in, and we had to call it a night. The next morning, during breakfast my mother, sisters, brother and I talked about Ms. Chin and the different ways in which we remembered her; whether it was for her scholastic achievements, her entrepreneurship, or her blunt honesty. For those few hours we relished in her memory as a family, laughing and crying together. When night came we all headed to my aunt’s house for â€Å"dead yard† or â€Å"nine night† (which is a kind of wake; where friends, family and community of the deceased come to pay their respects and eat, drink, play music and dominoes). It was my first â€Å"dead yard,† it was like a party; I never thought a wake could be so fun. (That, is when I realized that death doesn’t have to be so frightening, it’s apart of life, no one is promised a long life that is why it is important to do the best with the time we are given. My cousin was a great example of that; she achieved so much in such a short time. ) I didn’t fall asleep until 2 a.m. and it was still going on strong. The next morning, my mother, my siblings and I went home to prepare for the funeral that was only hours away. As we all assembled into the church, I could see the coffin, where my cousin lay lifeless. I began walking towards it, my head high and my back arched, confident that I could make without crying. With each pew my confidence lessened, I was only three pews away when my feet became wobbly and my eyes began to tear, I needed to sit down. From my seat I could see the face of my deceased cousin, and I began bawling. I stayed in that seat throughout the service, just wishing that somehow this was just a dream that I would wake up from, but it was not. After, the burial we all headed back to my aunt’s house for the last â€Å"dead yard†, this time I knew we were officially saying goodbye. I walked outside with Susan to the almond tree; we just stood in that spot under the night sky looking at the long asphalt road which lay ahead. It was time to go, we had said our goodbyes, but none of us were truly ready to move forward, at least not yet. While on the plane, I took one last look at Jamaica and said â€Å"good bye.† In conclusion, my cousins’ death and burial has brought home to me the necessity to take advantage of all the opportunities that are presented in life, it has also taught me to understand and appreciate that death is apart of living. Life has no certain expiration date; it is what you make of it that matters.

This is a process that has recently been established in most organizations including Bank central Asia.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Strategic Human Resource Management in Bank Central Asia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More According to Delery (1998), â€Å"it is the general approach to the strategic management of the human resource which is dependent on the intentions of the future directions that the organization is to take†. This organization targets manpower issues over a long time. In this, there is concentration on the type of quality results the company expects, and this considerably determines the structure put in place to achieve these resu lts. These human resource strategies are mostly concerned with the development of the service deliveries in a way that is fair, and for the overall improvement of workforce attitude, eventually leading to positive results in the performance appraisal. Strategic human resource management in Bank central Asia is especially useful in this particular industry, since it establishes an effective system of talent development and specialization capacity. The management structure of Bank central Asia is made up of different people working at different capacities for the success of the organization. This includes the chief executive officer, who is at the top of the leadership structure. He oversees all the activities in the organization, and the other managers report directly to him. Others include the financial manager in charge of finance, sales and marketing manager in charge of advertising and sales of the company’s products and services. Finally, is the human resource manager, wh ose function is to ensure that the company has a reliable workforce. Besides, he also ensures that the needs of the employees are being met adequately, and that the working conditions are effective for adequate service delivery. Role of managers in determining the success of strategic goals in Bank central Asia One of the most basic roles of managers in this organization is to create a culture for the organization. This is considered to be the most important, since it determines the uniqueness of the organizations and the elements that distinguish it from the other banking institutions. They also determine the philosophy of the organization, and this refers to the guiding principles and believes in the workplace.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Banking can be tiresome owing to the daily responsibilities involved, such as serving the long queue of customers and dealing with figures. The employees therefore need a constant motivation if they are to continue working in the organization for long. This is mostly done by coming up with a reward strategy that encourages hard work and innovation. They create the working environment and maintain it at a level that is conducive to both the employees and the organization at large. The other role played by managers in this organization is to create intra-organizational flows of people related to the strategy of the business. At one time or another, companies are faced with a need to change their strategy. This is mostly as a result of the changing trends in the business world that the organizations have to adapt to if they are to have an advantage in the market. Banks, for example, need to install some automated gadgets that have jus t arrived in the market to enable them serve their customers better. The management function in this regard is to look to it that the alterations have been done and that there are people to handle any new duties introduced into the organization. The next role is that of ensuring that the main executives in the organizations are matched with the strategy of the business. â€Å"This specifically applies mostly to companies that use product portfolio analysis approach to strategic management ,and is brought about by the growing interest in meshing strategic planning with executive skills† (Nankervis et al, 2002 pp 108). Managers, especially, in the human resource department are faced with the role of ensuring that the organization has enough number of employees with different capacities helpful to the organization. Being a bank and considering all the daily operations, this organization needs a relatively large number of employees for their service delivery to be effective. This , according to Begin (1992) requires the â€Å"development of a human resource planning system that can come up with accurate forecasts† (379).This is however faced with two major hitches, the first one being lack of reliable data as a result of incomplete appraisal of employees at the time of hiring.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Strategic Human Resource Management in Bank Central Asia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The second hitch is the absence of a strong business strategy link. This means that the â€Å"human resource plan is usually a paper exercise most of the time, and it ends up not getting utilized by the strategic decision makers effectively† (Begin, 1992 p. 399). Finally, in an organization such as Bank central Asia, the managers play the role of â€Å"growers, caretakers and undertakers† (Nankervis et al, 2002). Some organizations have different managers for each of th ese roles, but owing to the profit maximization and cost minimization goals, most modern organizations tend to incorporate all the roles under the job description of one position. This ensures a reduction in cost and increase in effective owing to the belief that more responsibilities lead to greater efficiency in the work place. Under the grower’s role, the management is supposed to develop policies that will expand the business operations, hence increase the amount of services and goods being offered to the customers. As caretakers on the other hand, they ensure that these operations are run effectively and they also monitor the progress and achievements being made. Finally, as undertakers, they deal with the technical part of the organization that requires skills and specific area knowledge. How effective employee management contributes to the success of this organization Employees are an integral part of an organization, and there is no organization that can survive witho ut them. They are the people who run the activities at the ground level and implement the strategies set by the management. Owing to this, the way they are treated is directly related to their performance. Organizations that have regulations in place governing the freedom of employees and their rewards are more successful, since they develop a system that is sensitive to the needs of each individual. Human resource managers are faced with a hard task of managing people unlike the other managers who deal with policies and strategies. They decide when to hire fire or promote. They also determine the remuneration package and the benefits endowed to the employees, in relation to their positions, experience and input into the organization.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Effective human resource management ensures that the employees have the motivation to work. When they are comfortable with the way they are being treated, they will develop the need to work effectively and ensure that the organization benefits from their input. On the contrary, employees who are not satisfied with the way the management treats them tend to develop an offensive attitude that only leads to poor performance, hence failure to the organization at large. The management can improve or destroy the attitude of the employees towards work. Harassing employees has never been fruitful in any organization. Research into organizations that have a good reputation indicates that they have a system of ensuring that all the employees are treated with respect. Any disrespectful treatment or even the intention of it is dealt with severely, and may lead to consequences as serious as losing one’s position. An effective remuneration system that is not discriminatory ensures that the employees are satisfied with the treatment they are given a fair treatment. This does not just include the monetary remuneration; it is inclusive of the psychological remuneration in terms of verbal appreciation and recognition for good work or improved performance. This results in a workforce that works towards the best performance, hence improving the general reputation of the organization. Co-orporation among employees leads to the development of unity in work which at the end of day ensures that all duties are performed with a high level of effectiveness. Emotional safety is the important aspect in the performance of an individual in all areas. This means that organizations that look into the psychological needs of their employees stand a better chance of performing well than those who only consider the amount of work done by the employee. At the end of the day, workplace issues such as strikes are usually as a result of emotional instability and not even the amount of remunera tion, as it is made to appear. Another way through which effective management of the employees is able to assist in the achievement of the organization’s strategic objectives is ensuring that the employees have a reason not to stay longer in the organization. Having to employ new employees more often usually costs the company more in terms of production. New people in the organization take time to adapt to the culture of the organization and this results into slowing down of the activities in that particular department. The factors that determine whether employees are willing to stay longer in the organization include the reward strategy and the working environment. An effective reward strategy is one that ensures the employees are comfortable with their roles and that they do not feel exploited. This may include things like providing them with healthcare cover, miscellaneous expenses allowances and work leaves, once in a while. This will ensure that the employees are able to stay for long in the organization, hence improving their productivity. Assessing and developing training needs in Bank central Asia One of the ways in which training needs are assessed is by talent evaluation and development. One of the things that the human resource managers should consider when hiring the workforce is talent. This will give them an overview of the capacities of these people that they are hiring. Talents can be developed in an organization and this process according to Begin (1992),involves â€Å"transforming the organization its employees and other groups of people involved in its operations† (400). One of the ways in which this can be done is facilitating a learning workshop with the aim of training the employees on how to work towards the establishment of competitive advantage in the organization. Once the individual talents have been developed, the organization can be assured of employees that have the interests of the organization at heart hence effect ive delivery of services. Another important need when training employees is the establishment of career development plans. In career development, the employees are able to define their areasof expertise and ensure that they handle tasks related to that which they have specialized in. As a result of this, the organization will be able to achieve its goals more effectively as there will be minimal or no conflict of work interest. Specialization also ensures that the employees are able to handle their responsibilities with expertise leading to a quicker fulfillment of the organization’s objectives and goals. Finally, assessing the training needs of the employees in an organization requires the company to carry out the process of appraising the performance of the individual employees. Group evaluation is necessary, though it has many setbacks such as the shortcomings of some people being covered up by the achievements of others in the same group. This explains why at some point t he employees’ performances have to be analyzed at an individual level as this will ensure that training facilities are developed in favor of at least a majority of the needs of the employees. Evaluating and rewarding managers in Bank central Asia Despite the fact that managers, in most cases, are not involved in the ground work they have a huge responsibility of ensuring that all the activities are running smoothly. Most of the times, they are forced to go beyond their normal work definition and make major decisions for the organization to function effectively. They are directly accountable to the owners and stakeholders of the organization. Owing to their difficult tasks of running the company, they have to be remunerated accordingly to their satisfaction. Their performance is mostly determined by the performance of the company in general. An organization cannot perform well if the management is not effective. It is also not possible for an organization to fail if it is unde r good management. This explains why the audit of a company that is not performing well usually begins with the management processes before checking on the other systems. This, therefore, means that the performance of managers is evaluated directly from the analysis of the organization’s performance. As for the rewards, managers are the highest paid people in any organization. In most cases, they even have shares in the organization. This ensures that they are able to manage the organization effectively to safeguard their shares. Since there is no higher position than management, they have no interest in being promoted and so everything they do is for the organization to grow. Their reward should therefore, be determined according to the amount of responsibilities they handle. Most companies prefer to make their managers as comfortable as possible by providing them with company housing, vehicle and other benefits such as medical for cover extended to family and holiday packag es, once in a while. This gives the managers an incentive to work towards further expansion of the organization, which means that their remuneration also increases proportionately. It is also advisable for a company to develop a system of maintaining their managers until retirement or giving them a longterm contract. This will ensure consistency in the management process; hence guarantee a positive trend of growth. Work place issues affecting the organization’s strategic goals One of the issues affecting the achievement of an organization’s strategic goals is the management philosophy. This is determined by the psychological contract entered to by the employees after being employed in the organization. It addresses the â€Å"nature of the exchange between the employees and the organization† (Delery, 1998 pp 300). The most common of this type of philosophy is â€Å"fair day’s work for fair day’s pay† (Nankervis et al, 2002 pp 120), which is a n indication that employees are paid according to the amount of work that they have done. This is only fair for the case of the employees who are in the habit of hiding behind other people’s achievements. However, it becomes unfair whereby some people might be out of work for very genuine reasons yet they lose their pay for being absent. In such a case, it reduces the motivation for the employees and some even end up quitting. The organization is not in a position to maintain its employees due to lack of incentive. To address this issue, the organization had to come up with a system that monitored the performance of the employees. They were rewarded not for turning up for work but for the quality of work done. This ensured that the employees came to work regularly and also developed the urge to work hard to improve their productivity as this is what was being rewarded. With time, an employee would be able to earn bonus points for continued good performance and this would moti vate them to improve better. New employees would be motivated by appreciating the slightest efforts to improve performance and this would ensure that they have something to look forward to if the purpose to work harder. The result of this action was that the performance of employees improved at a very high rate and the rate of labor turnover reduced meaning that more employees decided to remain in the organization and climb up the ladder by working hard. Conclusion From the above discussion, it is clear that Bank central Asia cannot do without the strategic human resource management department. This literally determines the direction the organization takes as well as whether it will grow or remain stagnant for a long time. Employees form an integral part of the entire organization and this explains why any department under human resource has to be considered with great concern. Employees who are not satisfied with their working conditions or remuneration package may end up being a l iability to the organizations. Again, having to bring in new employees each now and then costs the company a lot of revenue in terms of time and productivity. Therefore, the strategic human resource management has to be considered with great importance as it determines the general performance of the organization. Roosevelts New Deal.

Roosevelts New Deal. On July 2, 1932, at the Democratic National Convention, the crowd listened intently to the phrase," I pledge you, I pledge myself to a new deal for the American people." The New Deal name was soon applied to the program of reform and recovery instituted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. During the early part of the Great Depression, the economy had ground to a halt as a result of the stock market crashing and the unemployment rates skyrocketed as businesses shut down. Only a very small portion of the population actually held stock. The cause of the Great Depression was really a result of shallow economical prosperity. Most of the farmers and other industries struggled in the 1920's. Low prices, suppressed wages and production material prices, and lopsided distribution of income all influenced the spiraling effect of the Great Depression. The relative greed of businesses in terms of profit margins and little interest in the increase of wages and positive working environments also played a role.Franklin D Roosevelt grave - Springwood Estate - H...By not making allowances for increasing wages, businesses essentially reduced the spending power of the workforce. This made the products these workers helped to produce unavailable to them. The banking industries were also involved by reacting inappropriately to economical trends right before the crash. An increase in credit flexibility might have helped reduce some of the dramatic effects of the stock market crash. The relative reduction in disposable income as well as an inflexible credit system created a dramatic reduction in spending and effectively promoted a drastic reduction in the value of the dollar. When the market crashed, all of these factors that were hidden by a general belief in permanent wealth and prosperous trends sent the economy into a tale spin. Many believed that the United States would decline into dissolution and little faith...

Project Management Accounting(BBAC501) - Essay Example To put this into lump light it would be good to know what constitute a cost in manufacturing process. Manufacturing Overhead Costs Stocks are normally classified as an asset in the financial statements, and it is very pertinent note that each product mentioned as en inventory includes the costs of the following: 1. Direct material 2. Direct labor 3. Manufacturing (or factory) overhead Direct material and labour costs are directly traceable to the product being produced. Manufacturing (or factory) overhead on the other hand consist of costs which indirectly relate to factory and on this regard they are divided and allocated to each unit of product. Accordingly this cost are reported in balance sheet inform of finished goods and work in progress (WIP) (GAAP). There are also other costs that would be treated as manufacturing overhead depending on the circumstances for instance, a loyalty or property tax imposed on a factory building. Although it will appear as fixed cost GAAP requires i t allocation and assignment to each unit of manufactured product during such period. Other manufacturing overheads; 1. Material handling e.g. fork lifting opera oration for moving materials and units. 2. Technical expertise for setting up manufacturing equipment which requires some specifications. 3. Work force who inspect and supervise products as they are being manufactured. In my estimates the following are the assumptions which hold in my review 1. There was virtually no beginning inventory of raw material, work in process and finished goods. 2. At the end of the month, 10% of the materials purchased remained on hand, work in process amounted to 20% of the manufacturing costs incurred during the month, and finished goods inventories were negligible. 3. The factory occupies 80% of the premises, the sales area 15% and administration 5%. 4. Most of the equipment is used for manufacturing, with only 5% of the book value being used for sales and administrative functions. 5. Almost al l of the electricity is consumed in the factory. 6. The truck is used to deliver finished goods to customers. 7. The manager spends about one-half of his time on factory management, one-third in the sales area and the rest on administration. Multimedia Creative Project - Assignment Example According to Richard Louv’s ‘The Nature Principle’ he tells of how the  entire  family and whole societies can get happier, smarter and healthier through more encounters with the natural world (Louv 10). In this project, one out of his ten reasons why children and adults need vitamin-N is analyzed. The reason I chose is ‘Nature can reduce depression and improve psychological well-being (5).’ Scientists in Sweden have discovered that joggers who practice in natural green environments feel more reinstated and less angry, anxious, or depressed than individuals who burn the similar amount of calories exercising in a constructed urban setting (Louv 10). The reason I pick this reason is that in my video I experienced what the Louv’s discusses. When I was along the road in between the vegetations I felt restored and breathe fresh air that made cycling very enjoyable. The environment was green and lovely thus a place to reduce depression and improv es psychological health. However, a long the town center it was dull, congested and no fresh air (Louv 10). This is an indication that doing exercise within the town is less enjoyable, cannot reduce depression or improve psychological well-being. Researchers have developed models that can be used to associate human and nature. One of those models is HANDY (Human And Nature DYnamics) (Haila 100). This was originally constructed on the basis of predator-prey framework or model. Here the human population is taken as the predator, while nature, the natural possessions of the adjacent environment, can be seen as the prey, exhausted by humans. In animal frameworks, carrying capability is an upper limit on long-term population. The moment the population exceeds the carrying capacity, phenomenon such as migration or starvation bring the population back off (Haila 100). . However, in the circumstance of human communities, the inhabitants does not

Parent-Child Communication Throughout Adolescences

Parent-Child Communication Throughout Adolescences Denise Moon   The professional area of psychology this article represents is Developmental Psychology which can be defined as scientific study on how human beings develop during the course of their life span. The subject matter of this particular article focuses on developmental changes in parent-child communication throughout adolescences. Psychology professionals throughout this paper such as counselors at school, family youth counselings and social service workers advise will be used to assist on giving support on how to much sure parents and their teen s learn to communicate effectively. This paper will show the advantages of parent-child communication and how important it is to ensure parents and teens have an effective and close relationship. Communication can play a key factor for an adolescences and parent relationship. It is so vital that parents keep an effective line of communication with their child as well as when they reach teenagers. It is essential that parents keep a loving positive relationship with their child from early childhood to adolescents. During early adolescence it is essential that young teens feel comfortable having a conversation and discussing daily plans and private issues with their parents. Adolescences want to be able to communicate with someone they feel they can trust and not be judged all the time. Often parents feel uncomfortable talking to their teenager about certain things just as the teen does. As stated by Lippold, Duncan, Coatsworth, Nix Greenberg (2015 p. 1671), Interventions to improve mindful parenting may be one avenue to promote parent-adolescent communication during early adolescence. The psychological theoretical perspectives presented in this paper focuses on how the developmental changes in parents and child communication carries on from early childhood until middle or to late adolescents. Communication with your child early on their life gives parents a greater chance at forming a close relationship where the young teen feels comfortable opening up and talking with their parent. It is imperative to a teenager that the parent is actually listening to what they are saying as well as valuing their opinion. It can really mean a lot to a young teen to feel like what theyre saying is important. As a parent it is essential to take out the time and not interrupt the young teen until youve heard everything they have to say before passing judgment. It is vital that parents know how much communicating with their adolescences child could prevent their child from committing suicide, using drugs and many other issues that young teens face in todays society. Communicating with young adolescences can open many doors and opportunities to form a positive as well as loving relationship between parent and child. This also gives parents a chance to gain their childs trust. Teens in todays society have to face many issues in school today such as peer pressure which can cause them to become depressed and go through a deep depression which often leads to teen suicide. According to King Vidourek (2012 p. 15), Research clearly indicates family connectedness helps to prevent suicide even if teens are socially isolated from peers. According to Shireen, Janapana., Rehmatullah, Temuri Azim (2014 p.206), Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people aged 15-24 in the USA. Social Media has also become a major factor in the lives of many young teens today. Many teens have to deal with the cyber bullying and other issues that are out there now on the internet. Having a positive line of communication with your child allows you to be able to discuss with them all the advantages and disadvantage of being able to do things online. Communicating with the teen will allow them to feel like they can talk to their parents about the problems they having on social media and any other issues they may be facing,. Many teens commit suicide because they feel all alone and feel like they have no one who understands how they truly feel inside. According to Willard, (2006 p. 54), Cyber bullying may include sending or posting harmful material or using digital technology to inflict social cruelty on victims. In conclusion showing your adolescent teenager love and respect can allow a parent to open up those lines of communication and start a great relationship with their child. Communicating and listening to your young teen can play a major part in the teens life. Parenting is hard work and times have definitely changed since the nineteen eighties. Teenagers in todays society are faced with many challenges that can be solved through effective communication between parent and child.
